Wifi corresponds to layers 1 and 2 of the OSI model, and network addressing is handled by the router at level 3 (IP). Access point selection is not specified in 802.11, and is handled by the client device at layer 7, the application layer. Fast renegotiation standards are being developed. Same channel has pros (faster renegotiation) and cons (contention), and there are also pros (single client login) and cons (inability to determine and select access point) for using the same SSID. The same authentification procedure should be used for the same SSID, the client device IP address should persist, and streaming radio is a suitable test of renegotiation. A separate controller with light-weight access points centralises authentication and allows for fast renegotiation for enterprise solutions.
